Doncaster Sheffield International Airport formerly known as Robin Hood Airport is steeped in aviation history and is a fascinating place. Formerly RAF Finningley the airport was a designated long-range nuclear bomber base. You can still see the evidence of all its military importance with the five very huge Cold War hangars that housed Vulcan bombers. This is also the reason why the runway measuring up at an impressive 2.8km is so long. All that means that Robin Hood airport can accept all manner of flights from wide-bodied jet liners to the Space Shuttle. Yes you did read that correctly. Doncaster Sheffield’s airport was designated as an emergency NASA landing site. Let’s just hope you won’t be delayed by any errant spacecraft on your helicopter lesson!
